Inspirational Art

I love art that has true historical significance. This painting depicts the return of an American B17 "Flying Fortress" from a daylight bombing mission over Germany. As you can see the plane is pretty shot up, and yes that is a German fighter flying off to its right side. Due to the loss of one engine, the death of some crew, and the level of damage, the B17 was defenseless against the fighter. Rather than shoot down the bomber this German pilot had enough respect for his fellow flyers that he escorted the damaged plane back to the English Channel for a safe return to England. You don't hear many World War II stories that that.

I like this picture for another reason... My father, Edward Allan Polson (1923 - 1998) was a navigator on a Flying Fortress during WWII. He's a personal hero of mine for many reasons, this is just one of them. He was a great Dad!

  2. He was a great grandpa too (would love for you to record more of his history, and yours, too!). And what a neat story about that plane... gave me the chills.

  3. I am enjoying your blog! I had to get me another gmail account to be able to post. I can't remember my old one. I am thinking it is about time to make the switch from AOL. That's a great picture of Dad!
